Perhimpunan EULAR (The European League Against Rheumatism), tahun 2018, mengeluarkan rekomendasi mengenai olahraga yang aman pada penderita osteoarthritis. Penderita osteoarthritis atau gangguan sendi, baik akibat pengapuran maupun radang, cenderung mengurangi aktivitas fisik/olahraga dan menjadi semakin tidak aktif/sedentary.[1,2]
Beberapa kondisi yang menyebabkan penderita osteoartritis lebih sedentary adalah kurang informasi mengenai kondisi penyakit dan jenis aktivitas fisik yang aman. Selain itu, gejala penyakit yang belum teratasi (nyeri, kaku), rasa takut bahwa aktivitas fisik akan meningkatkan gejala, kebiasaan kurang suka olahraga, dan kurangnya support dari lingkungan sekitar pasien, menyebabkan pasien osteoarthritis membatasi aktivitas fisiknya.[1,2,14]
Sedentary adalah kondisi bila aktivitas sehari–hari seseorang menghasilkan level energi metabolisme kurang dari 3 metabolic equivalent method (MET). Umumnya pada kondisi ini, aktivitas sehari-hari dilakukan dalam posisi duduk atau berbaring, serta jarang melakukan olahraga.[1,2,14]
