Manajemen delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) merupakan topik yang sering dipelajari dalam kedokteran olahraga. Berbagai penelitian telah dilakukan untuk mencari manajemen paling efektif yang dapat diberikan kepada atlet atau olahragawan setelah menjalani berbagai pelatihan untuk meningkatkan performa fisik mereka.[1-4]
Berbagai kompetisi dan latihan yang dilakukan saat berolahraga akan memicu terjadinya kontraksi otot eksentris hingga getaran jaringan. Kondisi ini akan mengarah kepada kerusakan otot (baik kerusakan pada protein struktural serat otot hingga jaringannya), inflamasi jaringan, hingga peningkatan rasa lelah, dan delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS/Nyeri otot pasca olahraga) yang dicurigai disebabkan oleh produksi asam laktat, spasme otot, dan kerusakan jaringan konektif.[1-4]
Akibat negatif yang ditimbulkan dari proses timbulnya nyeri otot pasca olahraga ini, ,baik pada atlet maupun non atlet, adalah terjadinya penurunan kemampuan otot secara temporer. Akibat negatif lainnya adalah gangguan kemampuan gerak sendi, penurunan kemampuan fisik, dan meningkatnya resiko cedera. Gejala DOMS yang dapat dirasakan berkisar mulai dari sekedar kekakuan otot hingga timbulnya nyeri otot.[1-4]
