Estimasi waktu sejak kematian merupakan bagian integral dalam investigasi medikolegal dan kedokteran forensik. Terdapat berbagai metode untuk menentukan estimasi waktu sejak kematian seperti pengukuran suhu tubuh mayat, menilai perubahan morfologi mayat, pemeriksaan biokimia, dan pemeriksaan entomologi forensik.[1,3,5,8]
Estimasi waktu sejak kematian didasarkan pada interval post mortem (PMI) yang dibagi menjadi PMI tahap segera, awal, dan akhir. PMI tahap segera ditandai melalui perubahan fisiologis yang cepat, sedangkan tahap awal berhubungan dengan fase dekomposisi jaringan lunak. PMI tahap akhir merujuk pada pembusukan yang berujung pada skeletalisasi dan alterasi subsequent taphonomic matriks tulang.[1,4-8]
