Muncul kekhawatiran oleh beberapa ahli ada risiko aktivasi tuberkulosis (TB) akibat pemberian obat jenis kortikosteroid. Kortikosteroid merupakan salah satu golongan obat yang seringkali diresepkan oleh dokter untuk berbagai kondisi dari autoimun, reaksi alergi, hingga infeksi.[1,2,4]
Saat ini, tuberkulosis (TB) adalah penyakit endemis di Indonesia. Berdasarkan data yang dikeluarkan oleh The Republic of Indonesia Join External Monitoring Mission for Tuberculosis tahun 2020, Indonesia masuk ke peringkat ketiga beban TB dunia. Data tahun 2018, WHO mengestimasikan adanya 845,000 kasus TB dengan 93,000 kematian di Indonesia. Kasus TB juga meningkat akibat epidemi HIV, diestimasikan adanya 21,000 kasus baru TB akibat infeksi HIV. Sehingga, bisa diasumsikan banyaknya kasus TB laten di Indonesia.[1,2]
Kortikosteroid merupakan golongan obat yang banyak digunakan pada banyak penyakit, penyakit ringan maupun berat, baik jangka pendek maupun panjang, baik oral, injeksi, inhalasi atau dalam bentuk sediaan lain. Penggunaan kortikosteroid ini diduga bisa memberikan risiko aktivasi TB.[3]
